Clipboard History Saver

📋

Build a "Clipboard History Saver" App

in 15 Minutes

Have you ever copied an important address or tracking number, accidentally copied a snippet of text right after it, and lost the original forever? Mobile clipboard management is often hidden, limited, or easily overwritten. Today, we will build a local, privacy-first Clipboard History Pinboard using AI—without writing a single line of code from scratch.

🎮 Test & Inspect the Prototype

If you want to see the code, copy the code for your own project it's at GitHub, click the View code buttons.

To download and use the app created using AI at Google AI Studio use the Google Play link for testing by clicking the Download to Android Button.  Note:  The interface may different and match your device's default styling.

💡 The Opportunity: Why Build This?

  • The Problem: Most standard keyboards wipe clipboard snippets after an hour, clear them on reboot, or make retrieving past copies clumsy. Users want a permanent visual history they can control with one tap.
  • High-Intent Search Traffic: Everyday productivity seekers search keywords like "clipboard manager," "copy paste history," "clipboard saver," "multiple copy tool," and "clipboard vault."
  • Everyday Utility: Students, writers, researchers, and remote workers copy text dozens of times every day. A dedicated local vault becomes an indispensable daily workflow tool with exceptionally high repeat retention.

🎯 How the App Works

The app acts as a local storage buffer for copied text snippets, avoiding intrusive background clipboard listeners while keeping things fast and predictable:

  1. One-Tap Capture: A primary "Save Active Clipboard" button reads the system clipboard via ClipboardManager and pins it into an organized visual feed.
  2. Chronological Card Stack: Up to 20 recent snippets are displayed as neat Material cards, complete with a timestamp and text preview.
  3. Tap-to-Restore: Tapping any saved card immediately re-copies that string back to the phone's active clipboard, flashes a quick confirmation toast, and lets the user jump to another app to paste.

🤖 The Magic Prompt (Copy & Paste)

Copy the prompt below and paste it directly into your AI coding tool (such as Google AI Studio, Bolt.new, or Cursor) to generate the Android project:

Write a native Android app in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose. Build a privacy-first, local "Clipboard History Pinboard" utility app. Core Requirements: 1. Capture Mechanism: - Provide a prominent 'Save Active Clipboard' button pinned at the top of the screen. - On tap, use Android's ClipboardManager to safely read the current primary clip text. - Avoid duplicate consecutive entries and ignore empty clips. 2. List & Card Management: - Display saved items in a scrollable LazyColumn, keeping a maximum history of 20 items (auto-pruning the oldest item when capacity is reached). - Display each snippet inside a clean Material 3 Card showing a text preview and a relative timestamp (e.g., "5 mins ago"). - Include swipe-to-dismiss or a discrete trash icon on each card to remove individual items. 3. Fast Re-Copy Action: - When the user taps any card, set that string back to the device's active ClipboardManager. - Display a lightweight confirmation Toast or Snackbar: "Copied to clipboard!". 4. Data Persistence & Privacy: - Store the history list locally using Jetpack DataStore (Preferences) with JSON serialization. - Ensure 100% offline operation: no internet permissions, no external server calls, and no background keystroke logging.

🚀 Beginner 4-Step Launch Checklist

Step 1: Test Clipboard Permissions & Data Restores 🔍

Copy a web URL from your mobile browser, open your app preview, and tap "Save Active Clipboard." Verify that the card displays correctly. Tap the card, switch to your notes app, and paste. If the text does not paste, prompt the AI: "Ensure the card click handler assigns a new ClipData using ClipData.newPlainText() to the system ClipboardManager."

Step 2: Export the Build Bundle 📦

Export your completed project as an Android App Bundle (.aab) from your builder so it is compiled for store distribution.

Step 3: Emphasize Total Privacy in Your Store Listing ✍️

Users are rightfully cautious about clipboard utilities because copied text often includes passwords or personal data. Highlight in bold: "100% Offline," "No Internet Permission Required," and "Your Data Never Leaves Your Device."

Step 4: Upload and Publish 🎉

Upload your .aab bundle to the Google Play Console, confirm your zero-data-collection policy in the Data Safety section, and submit your utility for review!
